Kieran Larwood’s “adorable kiddie tale” (SFX magazine, 2016) Podkin One Ear has won the 2017 Blue Peter Book Award for the Best Story, as voted for by school children across the UK. The awards, run by BookTrust, commend the best new children’s books from the past year.

Published by Faber & Faber in October 2016, Podkin One Ear tells the fantasy adventure story of Podkin, the eldest son of a rabbit warrior chieftain. Podkin knows that one day it will be up to him to lead his warren, but for now, he’s quite happy to laze around annoying his older sister Paz, and playing with his baby brother Pook. Then their home is brutally attacked, and the young rabbits are forced to flee. The terrifying Gorm are on the rampage, and no one and nowhere is safe. With danger all around them, Podkin must protect his family, uncover his destiny, and attempt to defeat the most horrifying enemy rabbitkind has ever known.

Podkin One Ear is to be published in the US in September 2017 by Terry Pratchett’s former editor Anne Hoppe. It will publish in the Netherlands this spring, in France in 2018 and in Germany in spring 2019.

CD Ewan Vinnicombe from Blue Peter said: “The Blue Peter Book Awards have grown to become a highly respected accolade in the world of literature… Children across the country, along with our distinguished judging panel, have chosen two exceptional books as their winners.”
