Baroness Lola Young

After working as an actor in theatre and television, Baroness Lola Young became an arts administrator and, subsequently, Professor of Cultural Studies at Middlesex University as well as working as writer, cultural critic, public speaker, and broadcaster. Having published almost 40 academic essays, articles, and a book (adapted from her PhD), Lola turned her hand to advisory and committee work, shaping policy on arts, culture, equality, and diversity.

She has been involved in a number of judging panels, including Chairing the Orange Prize for Literature, the Caine Prize for African Literature, the Art Fund Prize, The Observer newspaper Ethical Awards and Chairing the Man Booker Prize. Lola has also been invited to speak/consult with organisations, activists and governments internationally and participates in crucial dialogues on modern forms of enslavement, labour abuse, and exploitation, especially—but not exclusively—in the fashion industry.
