Spotlight: Rory Scarfe, Agency Director

18 January 2019

Rory Scarfe, Agency Director
Agency Director Rory Scarfe represents a range of clients across commercial fiction and non-fiction as well as screenwriters and brands. Rory is on the look-out for storytellers of all stripes, who have the passion and ambition to see their work reach the greatest audience.

What is an average day like for you working as a Literary Agent and Agency Director at The Blair Partnership?

Our clients work across an ever-more varied and exciting range of projects in differing worlds, so no two days are the same. Some days are about working closely with a client on their newest idea and helping them to put it in its best shape, while others involve meeting publishers, producers, broadcasters, and other decision-makers to get the latest on what they are looking for.

We are looking for people with a real strength of voice and a story so amazing that they just have to tell it.

What do you enjoy the most about the author-agent relationship?

Being the first person to hear a new idea from a client is a great privilege and to have a hand in shaping that concept and helping to bring it to fruition is thrilling.

As an Agent for commercial fiction, non-fiction, screenwriters and brands, what would be your dream submission?

Whether it’s Fiction or Non-Fiction or a brand, destined for the page or for the screen, we are looking for people with a real strength of voice and a story so amazing that they just have to tell it. I am particularly interested in stories that can open the audience’s eyes to, and allow them to lose themselves in, a new world.

What is your Desert Island book – the one book you could not do without if you were stranded on a desert island?

There is no single book, it’s always changing happily. I read Mr Godley’s Phantom by Mal Peet at the weekend and can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a book that haunts you, in the best possible way.
